Does this sound familiar? Of course it does. I sayit, you say it, just about everyone we knows says this at some point. When we say we want to win the lottery and just get away from it all, what do we really want?
Imagine waking up tomorrow morning with the winning lottery ticket. How would your life change? Of course there is the obvious, no more bills and no more work, but what else would change? Would you still look around and have the same people in your life? If you answer no, then you obviously need to change some things in your life right now instead of waiting to win the lottery. What would you do differently in your life without any financial worries? Would you follow your dreams and have more time to do the things you love?
Most of us dream about winning the lottery and have a false illusion that our lives would change for the better. In this dream we all want the same things: peace, security, happiness and to follow our passions. Herein lies the problem, we all have this misperceived idea that money is the answer to achieving these things and this just isn't so. We can all find peace, security and happiness in our day to day lives without the financial means. These things are FREE
We spend so much of our time, thoughts and energy on hating our job, resenting our spouse, being angry at our co-workers, irritated by our neighbors, annoyed at our family, etc. that we forget to stop and be grateful for what we do have. Peace is free of charge to anyone. You just have to know how to obtain it. One way is to redirect your focus of attention. Instead of always thinking negative thoughts about everyone and your lot in life, start thinking positive ones. Be grateful that you have a job and you can support your family and pay bills. Be thankful you still have family members that are alive and doing well. Use your energy to get to know the annoying co-worker as a person and look at things from their perspective. If you cannot do this while you are broke, you will not be happy when you are rich.
You will find security in any relationship when you only act out of love and kindness. You will have financial security once you stop overspending and you realize it's the little things in life that are valuable. Think back to the times you were laughing and having fun with friends and family. I bet you were not spending a lot of money, yet those memories are priceless to you. Personally, I've had more fun having a watermelon seed spitting contest with my cousins than I've had shopping in a mall.
You also don't need a lot of money to follow your dreams. Of course we all have to work to pay the bills, but what else do you do with your time. Sitting in the recliner watching another re-run is not bringing you any closer to your dreams, nor is sitting on a bar stool way past happy hour. Use your free time to pursue your dreams. You don't need an expensive guitar and lessons if music is your thing nor do you need art lessons and the best paint brushes if you want to be an artist. We've all heard the stories like the one about Michael Jordon growing up in a low income neighborhood and learning to shoot hoops in the park without even a net attached to the basket. The point is, you don't need the best of the best, fancy one on one lessons or any of that jazz to follow your dreams. All you need is a little ambition and belief in yourself.
So ask yourself, what can I do today to make myself feel like a millionaire. Money can buy a lot of things but it cannot buy a positive attitude.
